about

"I mean we're all in different bands, let's just start a label together" agreed five or six individuals in 2001. Mike Lindau, drummer of Same Old Crap had the best suggestion with the name "Suckapunch Records," and the kids were off to start their first compilation.

Ironically enough, it was getting all of the much better bands like Cuterthans, Jank 1000, Jinxpack, or Straight Outta Junior High to agree to share a track with them, that proved harder than renting a few condenser mics and driving to Globe Kid Studios in Omaha and doing some drunk tracking. (Fatty and the Twins would forget to rent the condensers. You can tell.)

"Hit 'Em Where It Counts" released to a sold out crowd at the (now never having all ages shows ever again) Joyo Theatre in Lincoln. The college newspaper published a D+ review with the one word summary: "Sucksabunch."

This kickstarted the general workflow of the label, JV Allstars vocalist/guitarist Nick Tarlowski would max out a credit card so a band could record and press records, do some release shows, and pay him back in cash. Until the IRS said that it was super fucked up and wouldn't let him do it anymore.

Super trivia round goes to Jank 1000, who broke up shortly after the release of the comp. Singer/guitarist Matty Lewis would go on to join Zebrahead and play with them to this day.

Big ups to Eddie Morin at the defunct Globe Kid Studios in Omaha for his engineering/mixing on label leading tracks from Settle For Less, Same Old Crap, Fatty and the Twins, The JV Allstars, and Fourth Time Around. Eddie's band Super Molecular Dust Separator would provide hidden gems in the first two SPR releases.
